Messi Shines as Argentina Beat Italy in Finalissima

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was on fire as he inspired the Copa America holders to a 3-0 victory over Italy, thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria, and Paulo Dybala.

The 34-year-old who has witnessed an underwhelming campaign at Paris Saint-Germain this season returned to the national team to put up a remarkable performance at one of the best football stadiums in the world, by providing two applaudable assists.

The Finalissima victory was yet another memorable moment for the Argentines, adding another trophy to their cabinet after their victory over Brazil last year that ended their 28-year wait to win the Copa America.

The win, which takes Argentina’s unbeaten run to 32 matches, reinforces their reputation as the leading contenders to win the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, which would end their 36-year wait for the trophy.

For Italy, it was a disappointing return to Wembley, the stadium where they clinched the Euro Cup after they beat England on penalties 11 months ago. Since then their light has dimmed, failing to qualify for the World Cup after a humiliating defeat to North Macedonia in their play-off semi-final.

It was however an emotional night for Italy as they said goodbye to 117-cap skipper Giorgio Chiellini, who came off in his final game before retirement.
